Kentucky State Police SSP Ford Mustang

(Always looking for good photo examples of Kentucky State Police Mustangs. Feel free to contact the Admin HERE.)

The Kentucky State Police (KSP) Mustangs are some of the most aggressive SSP Mustangs to ever patrol the interstate. Especially the 1985 Mustangs. The gray paint, black wheels with center cap, and black wall tires, combined with the roll bar gave these cars a true hotrod/muscle car look.

Kentucky purchased (10) Mustangs in 1985 with federal grant money, and (5) in 1990 with forfeited drug money. Although the KSP Mustangs have been found with roll bars, the 1985 Mustangs didn’t start out with them. The roll bars were added later to protect Troopers in pursuit situations, but some Mustangs had already been retired prior to this. We’ve seen a photo of a 1990 without a roll bar, so they were likely added sometime after the 1990 purchase.

These cars featured:

  • Ford 5.0L V8
  • 5-Speed manual transmission
  • Roll Bar
  • Whelen Dashmaster emergency strobe lighting (blue) in the windshield and rear window (1985)
  • Whelen PAR36 emergency strobe lighting (blue) in the rear window (1990)
  • Whelen strobe grill lights (blue) in the front grill (1985)
  • Whelen blue strobe tubes in the front turn signals (1990)
  • MPH S80 Radar (speed measuring device)
  • VASCAR (speed measuring device)

These Mustangs were originally unmarked, and then marked later. The unmarked Mustangs had the 2-way radio mounted behind the rear bumper to avoid detection.
